Some rural regions managed to create a territorial dynamism in facing these challenges, whereas other regions did not. This formed the starting point of this book which is the result of the "RUREMPLO" ("Agriculture and employment in the rural regions of the EU") project, supported by the EU research programme FAIR (CT 96 1766) : it gives a comparative analysis of rural employment dynamics in leading and lagging rural regions in the EU member states during the last two decades. This book discusses a theoretical framework for the analysis of employment development in rural regions and provides a statistical analysis of socio-economic characteristics of all EU regions. A major part of the book considers in-depth case studies of pairs of leading and lagging rural regions in nine EU member states (incl. the Belgian province of Luxembourg). From this analysis a number of key messages for employment creation in rural regions emerge. |
